Amelita Mirolo Barn Wedding

You know how people always say “everything happens for a reason”? But sometimes things happen and they affect you in a big way but you just can’t figure out the why? I had a similar thing happen to me that lead me to this couple. I had started going to a gym and I didn’t have the best experience (for very personal reasons) and I stuck it out for five weeks, despite being unhappy. It had a big effect on my self esteem and I just couldn’t figure out why it happened. And then one day I received an inquiry about a wedding at Amelita Mirolo Barn in Upper Arlington with a couple named Jesse and Justin. Jesse’s mom had heard about me at that gym and sent Jesse to my website as they were looking for a wedding photographer. So now I know that I had to go through that experience so that I could meet who would end up being some of the most special people with whom my path has ever crossed.

We clicked from the very first time I met Jesse and Justin for our first consultation at Starbucks. We sat and talked wedding for an hour and a half. I knew I was dealing with someone special when Justin came prepared with his own list of questions for me. I mean, let’s be honest, the grooms usually aren’t that involved. But they knew exactly what they were looking for and when I showed up in my ultra short hairstyle (which was typically styled in a faux-hawk at that time) and my tattoos and I saw that Jesse also had ultra short hair and tattoos, I felt like we belonged together. This was my tribe.

By the time we shot Jesse and Justin’s engagement session I had already worked on a special shoot with Jesse for an album for Justin’s birthday and we had a pretty unique relationship established. So shooting their engagement photos was incredibly special because it gave me a chance to see them together and observe the way they love each other. My photographic style is sort of lifestyle…  natural and fun and romantic. People as they are. I like to photograph people and their interactions with each other, especially when it’s people who are in love. I like to put a couple in front of my camera and ask them to walk and flirt and dance and play and shoot whatever comes from those moments. These two are so perfect together. Their engagement photos were absolutely amazing and I knew their wedding was going to be something so wonderfully special.

And I was right. From the moment I walked in to Jesse’s suite at the hotel where she was getting ready, every moment was perfection. The team of vendors they had put together for their wedding day left no detail unturned. The theme for the day was “Enchanting Garden” and it didn’t disappoint. I can still smell the fresh lavender and eucalyptus that graced the tables in their reception space at Amelita Mirolo Barn. (That may or may not be because I still have the wedding favor handmade lavender soap they gave their guests in my car…) The light was incredible on this day and makes their images have the sweetest, magical quality about them. The bride and bridesmaids had made their own bouquets and centerpieces at Flowerman Flowers in Columbus and they were enchanting to say the least. Jesse’s bouquet was so stunning. Her dress…. There are no words to describe it, but it was as if it was made just for her. Justin had a custom suit with beautiful details (including a tag with their initials and their wedding date…. Are you kidding me?!?) Justin had a handkerchief made just for the flowergirl with a poem for her own wedding someday, as well as a pocketwatch for the ring bearer…  I just can’t even tell you how incredibly special every little thing about this day was. I was blown away at every turn by some thoughtful detail that Jesse and Justin put into their day.

Going through this journey with Justin and especially Jesse has made me so aware of how important my job is. I’m not just taking photos. I’m preserving memories. I’m recording someone’s history. Their legacy. And it’s moments like these that make me feel so incredibly blessed to be doing what I do and I promise you, I do not take it for granted.

Now, go look at just a few of my favorite images from Jesse and Justin’s wedding… while I go cry about how attached I am to this wedding and how sad I am that after they have their album in hand, this journey is over. But it’s just the beginning of a very special bond with my clients. I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them. <3
